The search for a dentist can be difficult and confusing. There are so many choices, and in a city that is as massive and sprawling as Los Angeles, not only finding the right dentist is important, but finding one in your area who you have the ability to make time for in your daily schedule can be just as big a hassle. You don’t have two and a half hours every day to jump part way across town for an appointment. You need someone much closer who can attend to your dental needs while not straying too far from the area of your daily errands.

This is without anything odd happening, like a chipped tooth, or an obvious sign of tooth decay. As important as finding the right dentist is, there are still a few tips that may be even more important. As any dentist, in any city, is likely to tell you, prevention comes first before treatment. Why spend the money and time getting multiple problems with your teeth and gums fixed when a good prevention program can help you undercut all of those problems before they ever reach the stage of becoming a problem. There are many prevention tips, and following these will not promise to make you invulnerable to cavities, plaque, or other problems—but it does strongly increase your chances of having far less problems than you would otherwise run into.

Some of the top tips are about brushing. Any dentist will tell you that you should brush twice a day, ideally right after a meal and with a fluoride toothpaste. Also, be sure to brush your tongue. Though this may sound strange, bacteria can build up there, and brushing your tongue may actually kill a lot of the bacteria that eventually causes problems in your gums and in your actual teeth. Replace your old toothbrush with a new one every four months more maximum effectiveness.

A dentist will also tell you that eating a balanced diet is important. Especially avoiding junk food snacks and soda. The sugar and carbonation is about the worst possible combination for your teeth. Heavy amounts of sugar, in any form, will always cause damage to your teeth and encourage cavities. Try to avoid these items, and you will probably find that you don’t need to make so many trips to the dentist. Also, flossing is a big must. Flossing daily helps clean and catch the bacteria from the middle of your teeth, where your toothbrush will have a much harder time cleaning. Flossing is also a huge way to help prevent gum disease.

While looking for a dentist, be sure to look for an actual dentist and not a dental cosmetic surgeon. While this may be great for Hollywood stars to keep unnaturally white smiles and look their best on the red carpet, your needs aren’t for cosmetic surgery, but for a dentist.
